Charles Frederick McCann

Charles Frederick McCann, known affectionately as "Chuck" and "Papa," 79, of Cape Coral, Florida, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 3, 2026, in Cape Coral, in the care of Hospice, with his daughter Jenny by his side. He was born April 24, 1947, in East Cleveland, Ohio.

Charles was Irish Catholic and had very strong conservative family values. He had a huge love and devotion to his country so he went on to serve in the United States Air Force. Serving in the Vietnam War, he was a very proud Vietnam Veteran. Through his years of service to his country, Charles made lifelong friends along the way and would share stories with his family about his brothers from Vietnam.

Chuck was a loving, kind, goofy, and caring father who gave the best hugs. You never had to question how much he loved you; he showed you and told you every day. He loved all of his children very much, and he would beam with pride when talking about their accomplishments.

Those who knew Chuck knew that his late wife, Alice, family, and friends meant everything to him. He loved being among people and especially among those he loved so dearly. Storytelling was his favorite pastime. He had so many stories to tell, some of them over and over. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, he loved telling stories from when they were little and always remembered every detail. Chuck was very proud of his grandchildren and shared a very special bond with them. Hence the nickname, Papa. The nickname Papa was given to him by his first grandson, Trent. He carried that new title very proudly and from there he became Papa to everyone. Aside from his children and grandchildren, Chuck had many nieces and nephews, each of whom shared a special and loving bond with him in their own unique way. He adored them all.

He was always the life of the party and would talk the ear off of anyone who would let him. He was always happy, smiling, and often referred to as a "hoot." To know Chuck was to love him. He had such an infectious personality, made everyone laugh, and was often the center of attention. Chuck had many friends from all over the world. He enjoyed meeting people and making new friends.

Football season was something he really looked forward to, meeting up with the Brown's Backers or attending a friend's Super Bowl party. You couldn't go anywhere with Chuck without him knowing someone, and he never left anywhere without making a new friend. He was truly loved by so very many people and he valued every one of his friendships so very much. He especially loved going to Overtime to see friends but most of all to see his grandson, Tyler.

Chuck fought a very courageous battle and held very high spirits, never once complaining or feeling sorry for himself. He remained positive and enjoyed every moment he had left. Though the road was very hard, he didn't travel it alone; he had his daughter Jenny and her family by his side throughout the entire journey. When speaking of his daughter, he referred to her as "My Jenny", they shared a very special bond. They were not only father and daughter but also best friends sharing an unbreakable bond.

Although our hearts are broken, we find peace in knowing Chuck is now pain-free, has perfect vision, and is reunited with his beautiful wife, Alice. What a glorious reunion he must be having with his brothers, his parents and all his loved ones and friends he has missed so dearly.

Rest easy, Papa! We will miss you more than words can express and we love you to the moon and back. Give everyone our love. We will keep your memory alive and hold you in our hearts forever. "It's not goodbye; it's see you later."

We are forever grateful to you all.

We were sent true angels to walk us through this journey. Chuck was shown amazing care, compassion and truly enjoyed his visits with everyone on the team. Lastly, we thank everyone who has reached out to our family during this time. Your kind words are truly appreciated.

He is survived by six children: Jennifer Birth (Rob), Joseph Gatz, Jason Gatz, Charles McCann, Michael McCann, and Therese Klik (Greg); three sisters: Eileen, Mary, and Ruthie; as well as ten grandchildren: Adisyn Birth, Tyler Birth, Trent Gatz, Reagan Gatz, Hayden Gatz, Bella Gatz, Tristan Gatz, Dominic Bamm, Evangaline Klik, and Ryan Klik.

Charles was preceded in death by his loving wife, Alice McCann; his three brothers, Tom, Jim, and Robert; and his parents, Robert and Ruth McCann.
