Obituary for George Joseph Ames
George Joseph Ames, born September 9, 1945, in Toledo, Ohio, passed away on January 31, 2026. The son of Earl and Clarabelle Ames, George grew up in Toledo and graduated from Macomber Vocational High School before proudly serving his country in the United States Air Force, including service in Viet Nam. George was honored to travel to Washington DC in 2025 with Collier-Lee County Honor Flight. (Welcome home brothers and sisters)
George lived a life defined by loyalty—to his family, his friends, his country, and his community. Upon returning from the service, George worked in the family business. Later, he worked and retired from the University of Toledo as a Master Locksmith. He was an active member of numerous organizations, including the VFW, American Legion, Amvets, Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Commodore Club, and was a Lifetime Member of Riverview Yacht Club.
A passionate sports fan, George cheered faithfully for the University of Toledo Rockets, The Ohio State Buckeyes, and the Cleveland Browns. He was well known for hosting spirited tailgate parties for UT football games—gatherings filled with laughter, good food, and George’s signature hospitality.
George loved golfing, playing pool, and perfecting his craft as a grill master. His talent in the kitchen earned him several recipe features in the Toledo Blade food section. After moving to Fort Myers, Florida, George became affectionately known by “Muffin Man,” “Chicken George,” and “The Joker.” No matter where he went, he never met a stranger.
George is survived by his wife of 21 years, Kathleen Harrison‑Ames; his stepson Steven (Melody) Harrison; his brother Mark (Sandy) Ames; his sister Gwen Baker; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
A Celebration of Life will be held on March 9th at the Cape Coral Fraternal Order of Eagles from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, with a future celebration planned in Toledo, Ohio. George’s warmth, humor, and generous spirit will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew him. Those wishing to make a donation in George’s memory should consider the Collier-Lee Honor Flight.
