John Richard Rushton, 82, of Lehigh Acres, Florida, formerly of Marquette, Michigan, passed away, Memorial Day, Monday, May 25th.
He passed away comfortably at home, surrounded by his loving family, Hope Hospice, and Comfort Keepers,especially Glenda Sims. He missed his wife, Catherine Rushton who preceded him in death on December 9, 2024. He is now at peace by her side.
John was born September 5, 1943 to Laura Medeiros and Walter Rushton in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. John joined the Air Force at the age of 17. On his initial enlistment he was in the air police in Vietnam until he was transferred to Weathersfield, England. He met Cathy and fell in love. They were married, July 4, 1964.
John was always working on vehicles. On his 2nd enlistment he transferred to the transportation unit and went back to Vietnam While stationed in Germany he opened a mechanic shop out on the economy where he also had a towing business. When John got orders to transfer to KI Sawyer AFB, he decided to move his business stateside. Formula one towing was located in Skandia. When he retired from the Air Force he moved the business and the family to Marquette, Mi.
John is survived by three children, Sharon Rushton of Ishpeming, MI, Donna Rushton of Florida and John Rushton of Nevada: five grandchildren, Andrew Rushton (Aubrie Carlson), Amber Rushton, Tiffany Rushton, Jeremy Rushton and James Ward; and four great grandchildren, Chance Rushton, Taylor Rushton, Peyton Scott and Oliver John Rushton.
John is our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will dearly be missed.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Laura and Walter, and his older sister, Judith Gosselin.
Committal Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, June 4, at the Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Rd 72, Sarasota, FL 34241.
Family viewing will be held at Mullins Memorial at 10 am. 3654 Palm Beach Blvd, Fort Myers, FL 33916.
