Marjorie "Margie" Ann Smith, 77, of Cape Coral, Florida, passed away on Monday, September 28, 2026, in Fort Myers. Before moving to Cape Coral in 2009, Margie was a longtime resident of Canastota, New York. She was born on April 18, 1949, in Syracuse, New York.
Margie married her best friend, Ric, on April 13, 1968. They shared 58 wonderful years of marriage before his passing in March 2026.
Throughout the years Margie was employed by St. Joseph's Hospital, Allergy and Asthma Diagnostics, and the New York Heart Center in the Syracuse area. Her care and compassion for others were never more evident than in the loving and devoted way she cared for her husband, Ric, during the later years of his life.
Of all the roles she held throughout her life, her proudest titles were Mom and Mamma. As a military wife, she showed her children strength and courage. As a stay-at-home mom, she instilled strong family values and created a home filled with love. She was the glue that held her family together and was the quiet force that helped keep their bond strong.
One of Margie's proudest moments was becoming a Mamma. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy, and she treasured watching each of them grow. She celebrated their accomplishments, shared in their lives, and loved them more than words can express.
Margie loved to sew and do needlework, and she created the most beautiful quilts with her hands and her heart. Through quilting, she found a special group of friends who shared her love of sewing. Over the years, those friendships became like family. Wherever Margie settled, she made friends, and each person she welcomed into her life held a special place in her heart.
Margie is survived by her four children: Frederic Smith III (Christina) of Greenville, South Carolina, and their children, Parker, Dawson, and Hunter; Melissa Stowe (Todd) of Cape Coral, Florida, and their children, Jayden, Emma, Noah, and Evin; Andrea Cowan (Tim) of Durhamville, New York, and their children, Keeley and Jack; and Timothy Smith (Tracy) of Woodstock, Georgia, and their children, Devin and Carson.
She is also survived by her foster son, Sean Leach of Gainesville, Georgia, and his son, Grayson; and her brother, Dean Houston (Tara Chandler) of Almond, North Carolina.
Margie was preceded in death by the love of her life, Frederic "Ric" Smith, and her parents, Ralph and Harriet Houston.
Margie leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, family, friendship, and countless memories that will be cherished by all who knew her. She will be laid to rest alongside Ric at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Margie's memory to the Quilts of Valor Foundation, PO Box 191, Winterset, IA 50273 or Wreaths Across America, PO Box 249, Columbia Falls, ME 04623.
