Mary Ann Chengeri-Grieco, 71, a resident of Fort Myers, Florida for more than five years, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 21, 2026, in Fort Myers. Born on June 5, 1954, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Mary was the daughter of the late Mike and Mary Chengeri (Cipala).
She was raised in Linden, New Jersey, where she grew up grounded in a deep Presbyterian faith that remained an important part of her life. Mary earned several advanced degrees from Trenton State College and dedicated 40 years to the Linden Public School District. She began her career as a vocal music teacher before becoming a guidance counselor at Joseph E. Soehl Middle School, where she made a lasting impact on generations of students. Mary also served as the head coach of the Girls Varsity Cross Country Team for more than 30 years and was an assistant varsity winter and spring track coach. Her commitment to her students and athletes was unwavering, and she was known for her encouragement, compassion, and strength.
Mary found great joy in spending time with her family and friends. She loved traveling on RV trips with her husband Dennis and daughter Rebecca, hosting and attending large family gatherings, and sharing meals filled with laughter. She especially cherished summers in Chincoteague, Virginia-often insisting that "Pop Pop" join in the adventures.
Mary was predeceased by her sister, Cheryl Gmitter.
She is survived by her loving husband, Dennis Grieco; her daughter, Rebecca Speich of Fort Myers, Florida; her brother, Michael Chengeri (Sandy) of Brookfield, Connecticut; her brother-in-law Robert Grieco (Donna) of Saddle Brook, New Jersey and a large and devoted extended family who will miss her dearly.
Mary was a member of the NEA, NJEA, UCEA, and LEA. She was also a member of the Tice and Shores Moose Lodge and VFW Auxiliary Unit 159. Mary was also active with LINCS, a local food bank in Linden, NJ.
Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Mary's life, which will be held at a later date in New Jersey.
In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the Linden Food Pantry (LINCS) at 45 E Elm St, Linden, NJ 07036.
Condolences may be shared with the family by visiting the online guestbook at www.MullinsCurtis.com.
