William Lewis Hilliard, “Bill,” age 89, passed away surrounded by love and care on Thursday, January 29, 2026, in Cape Coral, Florida. He was born on February 12, 1936, in Chassahowitzka, FL.

Bill loved adventure and enjoyed traveling; he was a builder, educator, and private pilot. He founded the Marine Science Station for children and served as the Director of Crystal River High School. He loved life, and life loved him in return.

Bill lived a life full of passion, curiosity, and adventure. He saw the world from a unique perspective, loved nature as much as he loved his family, and was kind to the people around him. His love of learning and discovery left an impression on many, providing opportunities for young minds to explore the wonders of the natural world.

His adventurous spirit (his friends affectionately called him “Indiana Jones”), his generosity, and his lifelong commitment to education and exploration will be remembered by all who knew him.

He is survived by his beloved wife, María del Carmen Ayora Hilliard; his equally beloved daughter, Gail Hilliard Dawsy (Jeff); and grandson, Destin Dawsy (Kathleen).

His extended family includes: Denise and Brittany Nichols; Marcela, Peter, and Christian Lilliegren; Bertha, Marcela, and Elmo Ramos; and Juanpi Mantilla.
